Research to Prevent Blindness

Vision Research Funders Convening and Partnership

In the field of vision research funding organizations, RPB is uniquely positioned as the only grant maker in support of research into any and all conditions that cause vision loss. Embedded in RPB's founding principles is the concept that the organization could and would evolve strategies to meet the emerging needs of the U.S. vision research community. On September 17, 2014, RPB hosted an historic convening of key leaders from 21 vision-related organizations and started an important discussion on taking collective action in preventing, treating, and curing eye disorders. In subsequent meetings and working groups, the evolving partnership endorsed the following areas for potential collaborative action.

  • Advancing the public health agenda, to address vision problems of the aging US population.
  • Encouraging funder partnerships (private/private; public/private), to leverage resources and enable research that no single funder could undertake alone.
  • Coordinating information, for the benefit of vision research funders and grantees.
  • Coordinating and supporting advocacy, to raise the profile of vision research, increase federal funding for eye research, and drive education of policymakers and the public.
  • Supporting interdisciplinary research from within and outside vision research, to promote and accelerate innovation.
